The Orange Girls embrace the strange and peculiar in their originally devised pieces. Every show tackles new societal issues through lo-fi spectacle. The Orange Girls attempt to queer the creation process and with that, produce experimental offerings of what theatre could be. The Orange Girls are an ensemble facilitated constantly by director, Desirée Leverenz. We are committed to creating highly visual performance experiments, bringing together a variety of artists to break down the hierarchy of theatrical performance that mirrors our hierarchical, patriarchal social system.
Our namesake comes from some of the first non-male performers. Actresses would disguise themselves as male performers, and then continue to dress in female drag for the show itself. This infiltration of the patriarchal system, and queering of traditional gender roles on stage is forever inspirational to us and why we call ourselves The Orange Girls.
